DRIVER CPC (PCV)

The new Driver CPC is for LGV and PCV drivers who drive professionally throughout the UK. It has been developed as a requirement of the EU Directive 2003/59, which is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of professional LGV and PCV drivers throughout their working life. There are two parts to the legislation:-

(1) Initial Driver CPC
Initial qualification for new bus and truck drivers

From 10th September 2008
All new bus (PCV) drivers will have to gain this qualification.
Licence categories are: D1, D

From 10th September 2009
All new truck (LGV) drivers will have to gain this qualification.
Licence categories are: C1, C

(2) Periodic Driver CPC
Periodic training for established LGV and PCV licence holders

From 10th September 2008
All established bus (PCV) drivers will have to gain this qualification by completing 35 hours of periodic training (5 days) before September 2013.
Licence Categories are: D1, D1+E, D, D+E

From 10th September 2009
All established truck (LGV) drivers will have to gain this qualification by completing 35 hours of periodic training (5 days) before September 2014.
Licence Categories are: C1, C1+E, C, C+E

With “Initial Driver CPC”
To become a driver and successfully gain the DRIVER CPC a new driver must pass the following 4 modules:-

Module 1 Theory and Hazard Awareness Test

Module 2 Case Study Questions and Answers

Module 3 Practical Driving Test

Module 4 Practical Demonstration Test


STAY QUALIFIED
With “Periodic Driver CPC”
All established bus and truck drivers will need to do 5 days training every 5 years covering the following topics:-

• Advanced training in rational driving based on safety regulations
• Application of regulations
• Health, road and environmental safety, service, logistics

In order to drive professionally, all established PCV drivers are required to undergo the 35 hours of Periodic Training within a five year period from 10th September 2008 until September 2013 (CPC for LGV follows on exactly one year later – e.g. 2009 to 2014).

The 35 hours can be split into 1 day sessions lasting 7 hours each. To meet these requirements, we currently have 5 courses to choose from, all of which have been approved by the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT).

(1) Laws & Regulations – Includes Licensing; Health & Safety at Work Act; Drivers Hours & Rest Periods; Environmental Laws; Weights & Dimensions; Road Transport Act & VOSA; Accidents & Emergency Procedures; Questions & Answers.

(2) Vehicle Maintenance & Loading – Includes Walk Road Checks; Fluids; Recording Daily Checks; Basic Driver Maintenance; Luggage; Passenger Loading & Seating; Vehicle Cleanliness; Lost Property; Complaints; Questions & Answers.

(3) Driving (The Vehicle) – Includes Operating Systems; Driver Planning & Preparation; Braking & Controlling; Gears; Efficient Driving; Fuel Economy; Tyres & Dynamic Forces; Keeping Standards; Questions & Answers.

(4) Driving (The Driver) – Includes Health & Welfare; Hazard Perception; Defensive Driving; Restrictions & Vehicle Limitations; Fines & Penalties; Questions & Answers.

(5) Risk Assessment & Accident Reduction – Includes Risk Assessment; Accident Reduction; First Aid; Dealing with Accidents; Reporting Accidents; Damage; Spillages & Environmental Impact; Questions & Answers.
